(REVIEW) Transformers 5: Michael Bay's Final (Bitter) Offering

 Story: 5 | Characterizations: 5 | Visuals: 8.5 | Sound Effects/Scoring: 6.5 | Final Value: 6.25 /10

Have you ever experienced blind love with someone? You love him so much that you are willing to sacrifice yourself and do anything for him. In fact, he doesn't really think about you at all. What's there is that you are constantly disappointed as if there are no bosses.

Well, the Transformers movie feels the same way. You've been waiting so long for it to finally show up. Eh, I know when I watched it, it was really disappointing. Even though Viki isn't really a big fan of Transformers, for some reason, every time the film is released, I feel really reluctant to watch it until it's too late. Viki was not disappointed, how about you who are already a big fan, huh?

Already in the fifth film, there are no signs that the Transformers film is improving. Yes, this movie is that bad . If you hate the fourth film, believe me, this fifth film will make you angry to the maximum level.

Viki is confused by Michael Bay. We all know that Transformers: The Last Knight will be the last one for the director who also directed Bad Boys and Armageddon . Of course, what everyone expects is that the fifth Transformers film will be a sweet farewell gift for the loyal Transformers fans who have been following since the first film. The result, instead of being sweet, the "gift" given was bitter.

Bay still uses the same story formula as the previous Transformers films : human civilization is threatened by the existence of robot aliens. Whereas in the fourth film the threat comes from within, in The Last Knight , the threat comes from outside the Earth. A Transformers called "the creator" ambitions to rehabilitate the planet Cybertron. For this reason, they are desperate to destroy Earth, aka "Unicron", which is considered to be the culprit behind Cybertron's destruction. Here, Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg) is back in action to prevent this from happening.

Actually, the premise of this film is promising. Moreover, it was rumored that there would be a story of King Arthur and the Nazis in the fifth film. It must be admitted that Paramount's strategy to make the prospective audience enthusiastic is a great success. Unfortunately, the output that was given was not as fantastic as was touted from the start. What Viki feels when watching the film is more or less the same as what happened to Mike Ryan, a film critic from UPROXX.

" Transformers 5 can kill your brain cells. I don't have any proof, but I'm not surprised if you feel the same way," said Mike Ryan, UPROXX.

Yes, overall Transformers 5: The Last Knight will shake your soul. It's different from Transformers 4: The Last Extinction which just makes you bored and sleepy. Transformers 5 is already at a stage where you are completely speechless. Just like some previous Transformers films , Transformers 5 doesn't have a story that is easy to digest and makes you bored at the beginning. It's a shame, even though the premise of this film could be interesting if the team of screenwriters Art Marcum, Matt Holloway, and Ken Nolan could come up with a story that was more connected, simple, and rootless.

Since the start of this film, you will really know that this film is “Michael Bay”, starting from the fantastic action scenes decorated with slow-motion to the sound effects that make your ears hurt. Honestly, this "Michael Bay style" is very disturbing for you to watch this film. So, you won't be able to fall asleep when you feel bored with the story. There is even a feeling of bitterness that makes you don't hesitate to leave the cinema.

Another characteristic of Transformers films is the cheesy dialogue between characters . And, it's still there in Transformers 5 , even worse. There are a lot of dialogues that should be short, but instead are lengthened. One thing you might feel is a sense of being disturbed by dialogue that is not spoken, but by shouting.

This characterization is one of the most disturbing things. There are a lot of characters that don't really matter. For example, like the old character who returned again, Lennox (Josh Duhamel). Viki feels that even without him, this film could still be possible. In addition, Lennox's existence doesn't feel complete without the presence of his partner, Epps (Tyrese Gibson). Tyrese's absence, to be honest, made Viki disappointed. You see, previously he was rumored to be appearing in Transformers 5 . Viki was really looking forward to appearing in this film with her silly acting. The result is zero.

Not quite there, Bay et al added one character whose existence is really disturbing, namely Izabella (Isabela Moner), a 14-year-old boy who goes on an adventure with Cade and the Transformers. Viki must give two thumbs up, really, for this little actress from the United States through her total acting. Unfortunately, Moner's totality seems to be exaggerated and his acting doesn't feel natural. From Viki's point of view, as an adult audience who expects fantastic actions, Izabella's existence doesn't really matter at all. It looks like Izabella is being included as a character to attract a child audience.

Fortunately, behind all these shortcomings, there is a senior actor Anthony Hopkins who has successfully made this film colorful. The acting is quite good when compared to acting from other actors/actresses. In addition, you will see the humorous side of Hopkins, which will finally make you laugh out loud after a few hours of being given only forced jokes.

In addition, Bay and Transformers once again made the audience satisfied with their fantastic visual presentation. For those who like robots like Viki, the effects in this film are quite satisfying. Actually, there are effects that look broken and don't stick together in some scenes. However, Viki doesn't think this is a problem because Bay and his team continue to present the bombastic action scenes that have become his trademark.

One more thing to note: you won't get a lot of fighting scenes between robots. The action scenes between Prime, Bumblebee, Megatron, and other robots feel less "wow". In this film, the action scenes will be heavier on humans (Cade et al). There is no climactic scene like Prime vs. Dinobots in the fourth film. Because there are so few robot scenes, the presence of a new robot like Hot Rod feels in vain.

To be honest, this battle scene between robots has become a magnet for the audience to watch the Transformers movie . So, this is what makes Viki a bit skeptical if this film can reach a billion dollars like the fourth film. If this continues, it is inevitable that in the future the Transformers film will become less interested, considering that this fantastic and bombastic robot action scene is the main selling point of the Transformers film series .

Transformers 5: The Last Knight will indeed make you feel a dilemma. However, among all that, Viki thinks, there's nothing wrong with watching this film, especially for those of you who like robots and action scenes. This film will feel satisfying if you watch it because of the robot. Unfortunately, for those of you who are really moviegoers , this film will waste 149 minutes of your time. Instead of grumbling and getting angry with yourself, it's better to think twice before buying a ticket.

BTW , this film has a sequel, you know. The rumor is that Paramount will make 12 more Transformers films in the future. If you feel that you are fed up with this film, Viki advises you, try to get rid of your pessimism. Michael Bay is out. So, there is still hope that Paramount will give freshness to the next Transformers films later. I hope so, yes!
