Being a producer or director of a horror film is really tricky . On the one hand, there are demands to make a story that is scary and suspenseful. However, often horror films are too concerned with jumpscare or sadism, then forget about other important aspects. That's why it's common knowledge that horror films are huge successes at the box office, but fail miserably in the eyes of critics. Well, it turns out that there are also horror films that do the opposite. Get Out is an example. This horror film managed to make big profits at the box office and also received a positive response from critics.
Moviegoers certainly knows the movie rating site Rotten Tomatoes very well . This site often gives indiscriminate judgments, sometimes even sadistic. So, once there is a film that gets a good rating, even almost perfect, it is certain that the film is very special. Get Out is one of the films that meet that criteria by getting a rating of 99% from 224 reviews that came in.
Get Out has also succeeded in making people willing to leave their homes and watch this film in theaters. The film was a huge success in the United States, earning $150.3 million, plus 6.7 million from worldwide views. In fact, Get Out had beaten a film in the class of The LEGO Batman Movie in its first week of screening.
Honestly, these facts make Viki feel super excited and wonder, is Get Out really that good? The answer, Yes. Get Out lived up to what was advertised by 224 near-perfect raters on Rotten Tomatoes .
Curious about the story? Don't worry, in this review Viki will not divulge the story in general terms, except for the synopsis that Viki will give after this. Believe me, this film will be less fun if you already know the leak. So, it's better if you wait for the film to be released on April 7th.
This anti-mainstream horror story begins with a black photographer named Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) who has been dating a white girl named Rose (Allison Williams) for 5 months. Leading to a serious relationship, Rose invites Chris to meet his parents. Chris knows that it will be difficult because Rose has not told her parents about her interracial relationship. In the end Chris agreed to meet the Rose family. Chris' visit was not as beautiful as imagined because he would experience events that would never have been thought of before.
Well, not only Chris who will experience unexpected things, you will also feel the same way. Get Out really has a completely unpredictable story. From the very beginning, this film will invite you to wonder about what really happened and what will happen next. You will also feel curiosity and confusion for 1.5 hours until this film reaches its climax. This film is full of puzzles like a puzzle. You have to structure it so that you understand the whole premise.
Horror movies like this sometimes feel annoying for some people who don't want to think long while watching movies. For those of you who are lazy to think, don't worry, because you will be helped by a plot that is neatly arranged from beginning to end. So, you don't need to be afraid of being confused when watching this film, because all the questions that arise in your head will be answered when the film ends.
Director and screenwriter Jordan Peele is responsible for the success of Get Out . Viki has to admit, Peele's creativity has gone out of bounds. Viki has never watched a horror film with a premise as unique and strong as Get Out . Because of the strength of Peele's story, this film is still fun without any extravagant jumpscares or sadistic scenes like horror films in general.
In addition, Peele also managed to build a plot in stages, from calm situations to annoying and endless terror. Peele is also successful in playing emotions and making this film interesting. Maybe Get Out 's emotional game isn't as epic as Cabin in the Woods. But you will feel the same "satisfaction" when this film enters the end, unlike horror films in general which often become anti-climax at the end.
This film is different from other horror films because of its humor. Get Out 's success makes us feel scared and laugh out loud at the same time. As a director who is also a comedy actor, Peele has succeeded in incorporating humorous humor that builds and flows naturally. The humor that is included in the scenario is also not a cheap joke. Apart from the knowledge from Peele himself, everything can't be separated from the role of comedian Lil Rel Howery as Rod. His role as Chris's funny friend makes this film come alive with his cool jokes.
The depiction of situations and emotions in Get Out is supported by a sound effect game that is not too much. You will not hear the strains of the violin with a tense tone in the style of Insidious or Conjuring that will make your adrenaline rush. On the other hand, the sound effects and music that are heard in Get Out actually make you feel confused and motivated to keep thinking.
Apart from that, the most favorite aspect of this film according to Viki itself is the realism. From beginning to end, all aspects of this film, from the story to the characterizations, feel reasonable and rational. The most visible example is the portrayal of intelligent and logical thinking characters. Usually, horror films have stupid characters who can only scream or stare when they are about to be torn apart by ghosts or criminals. In Get Out , both the protagonist and the antagonist will find the best and most realistic way of dealing with their enemies.
The characterizations are the best aspect of this film. The actors/actresses play their roles independently. You will see the expressions of the characters that match the situation they are currently facing. Even the way they express can also make you feel what they are feeling. The chemistry between the characters is also very natural, especially between Chris and Rose, who seem like real lovers.
In Get Out , the racial aspect does have a big role. Maybe this racial issue sounds controversial. But this is what makes this film so alive. Indeed there are some scenes that sound racist. It seems clear that Peele is trying to convey a message about the importance of this racial issue. But he manages to portray this controversial subject with his satirical style and fun sense of humor.
Viki has to say that Get Out is a near-perfect horror film. There are no significant defects in this film. Maybe Viki's fault. But I guarantee you that you won't even think about finding the fault, because you will be "forced" to think hard about how this film will end. In addition, maybe for some fans of horror/ thriller films , Get Out is not the right film to meet your need for fear and surprise. This film is actually not that kind of film.
The point is, you have to watch this film, because you will regret it if you don't watch this film. Besides being really fun and cool, Get Out offers an alternative and something completely new to the size of a horror film. This is inseparable from the role of director Jordan Peele. As a debut director, Peele did his job very well. Get Out is clear evidence that a horror film can really be a good film if it is directed and made seriously. Peele's extraordinary work is supported by the cast and crew who also work to the maximum.
The success of Get Out is arguably going to pave the way for the director to be more daring to explore other alternatives in a horror story. Last year, Don't Breathe was the opening act, followed by Split , which also offered an unusual premise for a horror story. Not to mention It will be released in September. So, maybe next year or even this year we will see other horror films that dare to step out of our comfort zone. I hope so, yes!
